As Amherstview grows, so too does its fire department. On November 24, the Loyalist Township Emergency Services held a ground-breaking ceremony at the site of the new Amherstview fire station at the intersection of Amherst Drive and Speers Boulevard.
The station, to be completed in July 2012, will be similar to the Bath fire station and will include three double-depth bays, storage space, a communication room, offices, training room and a firefighters' area. The 10,000-square-foot building will also include men's and women's washrooms and shower facilities, and will house the municipality's Information Technology department.
Loyalist fire chief Wayne Calver explained that the existing fire station in Amherstview, built in 1966, has become crowded and congested as, over the years, it has been joined on the same site by a community hall, a Lions Club hall, and a large sports complex.
